THE NEW COW

The coloured cow of an unconventional daltonian
Etto margueret works

To know any more…

amiche etto margueret Etto Margueret was a "tchit". A child herdsman. His story is not one of those sad stories from bygone times of child exploitation. In spite of the early death of his father and his mother’s emigration to France in search of work, his was a tranquil childhood with his grandparents. Up in the "mayèn" in summer, running through the fields, bored to death grazing the herds, teasing the pigs, in short doing what a child had to do. Etto has always known cows: for the better and for the worse (for the animals of course). Indeed, having left the high alpine pastures in search of his own destiny, he found them again but this time, in a butcher’s shop in Paris. One can say that for him it was a sort of change from the figurative to the abstract. Cut up into luscious beefsteaks, he sold them sold to Parisian customers for five long years. Now, at over seventy years of age, he paints them. Because for Etto painting has always been his real passion. Therefore for the third Desarpa edition - Feast of the cow - I had to record him. Very well known in the Aosta Valley as the painter of the “Tribù dei Visilunghi”, portraits of famous and not very stretched out characters, as well as for the numerous other crafts he practised, Etto pays now homage to those who, in one or another way, have been his companions for a large part of his life: Cows . Indeed the surfer could see on this time something different in his paintings. He could see the solemnel mountains sparkled with sun and he will see them : cows. Strange creatures with a recognizable shape but colours which spring out of a thoughtless daltonian's palette. Some incredible violet, green, red spots caracterize the mantle of these extrarodinary herdcows built up like a traditional photography : the cows are grazing as usually, licked themselves as ever, looked overthere with their usual eyes but the colour is an unrealistic person's one who takes advantage of a "defect" which leggtimizes it and make him proud of his variousness. Some yellow and violet, red and green harmonies give us an idea of his complete chromatic freedom and the successive great entertainement. In this chromatic exalting, he has undoubtfully fun a lot. As if he turned into atchitt by running through the ideal fields of painting to do everything. If the conventional bareers do not help to pass through the compromises with the reality, his ability to build the space through the pure colour, destroying the prospect creates a spontaneous stylistic opposition with some rather ironic effects. Cows as brightly spots. Some odd mutants that Etto drew out from the normality of the context to transfer them in a timeless place but with a precise name : colour

BIOGRAPHY

Etto Margueret was born in Saint-Rhémy-en-Bosses July 31st, 1929. In 1947 he must emigrate to find a job. He finds one in Paris where he lives for 25 years. During his leisure time he likes to meet the Montparnasse, Montmartre and Place du Tertre painters and develops his passion for art. Greatly bound to his valdostan origins, he starts to carve some wooden low relieves that he kept until now, but his meeting with Alphone Perron painter is decisive to become a painter. He develops a deep professional and friendly relationship with him. In 1972 he comes back to his loved Aosta Valley and with his wife opens a restaurant : La Chaumière where he is busy at full time. He does not forget his life with the parisian artists and later when his work grows better, he dedicated himself to paint. He exhibits some rather odd and originally stretched out portraits in his workshop. The painters who meet him as Enrico Ciappei invite him to proceed on this so particular style. And thus appears the "Tribu dei Visilunghi" a group of faces of wellknown or not people painted on 20cm per 100cm paintings. With the Tribu he travels through Italia and abroad

La desarpa -expo 2004 gives him the occasion of trying a new theme in painting but very known along his life : cow. The exhibited works have been created by Etto for this event
